Pool Deck Coating in Hayward, CA

Pool deck coatings put a textured, barefoot-friendly surface over the existing concrete around a pool, from sprayed acrylic knockdown to UV-stable polyaspartic flake.

  • Cost

national guides put pool deck resurfacing at about $3 to $12 a square foot, or roughly $1,500 to $10,800 for a 500 to 900 square foot deck.
  • Plain vs decorative

a basic overlay runs about $3 to $6 a square foot; colors, stains and textures push it to $6 to $12.
  • Cool deck topping

adding a heat-reducing cement topping costs about $4 to $6 a square foot in the same guide.
  • Time

a polyaspartic flake system can go down in a day. A full resurfacing adds washing, repairs and leveling before any finish.
  • What's included

cleaning, crack and joint repair, the coating or topping, and resealed expansion joints at the coping.

Hayward Epoxy Floors hands your request to an independent local installer who resurfaces and coats concrete pool decks. The usual systems are a sprayed acrylic-cement texture knocked down with a trowel, a cement "cool deck" topping, or a polyaspartic flake coating with grit in the topcoat. Each one has to handle bare feet, pool chemicals and full sun, and each treats the joint between deck and coping differently. Send a few photos of the deck, including any cracks, and the installer can tell you which of these your concrete will take.

Pool Deck Coating Systems

Acrylic Knockdown Texture

One national coating franchise calls this its most popular pool deck coating: a water-based acrylic texture sprayed onto the concrete, then knocked down with a trowel. The texture also feels cooler underfoot, because bare feet touch only the high points, and it grips when sealed with the right sealer. Light colors stay cooler than dark ones.

Polyaspartic Flake Pool Deck with Grit

A flake system on a pool deck uses a UV-stable, non-yellowing polyaspartic rather than plain epoxy. The installer broadcasts chips, quartz or sand and seals it, and many systems finish in a day. Wet bare feet need more grip than a flake floor gives on its own, so ask for grit in the final coat; our quartz flooring page gives the slip-resistance targets for pool decks. Pick a light blend, since a smooth, dark deck runs hotter in the sun than a light, textured one.

Cool Deck Toppings

"Cool deck" began as a brand of textured cement topping, first made in 1962. The maker says its topping significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete, cleans with a hose, and isn't affected by normal pool chemicals. One national guide adds that it's non-slip and helps the concrete last longer. It goes on as a textured coat over the deck concrete.

Coping and Expansion-Joint Sealant

The joint between the deck and the pool coping opens and closes as the concrete heats and cools, and its sealant is what keeps that joint weather-tight. Pool deck joint sealants are pourable, self-leveling rubbers that can stretch or compress by about 25%. A sound joint follows a 2:1 width-to-depth shape, with the sealant between 1/4 and 1/2 inch deep over a foam backer rod. Ask whether the old sealant comes out and new goes in as part of the coating job.

Resurfacing a Cracked Pool Deck

When the deck is cracked, uneven or flaking, a coating alone won't fix it. Resurfacing starts with pressure washing off old coatings, then repairing or removing crumbling concrete, leveling sunken slabs, and placing a thin new layer before any finish goes on. Cracks can point to a deeper problem under the slab. Our concrete crack repair page explains how to tell, and concrete resurfacing covers the overlay itself.

Pool Deck Coating in Hayward's Weather

Hayward's summers are mild. The city's own profile puts the July average high near 71°F, so a heat-reflective topping is more of a comfort upgrade here than a must. Sun is another matter. With about 257 sunny days a year, UV stability counts more than heat. That rules out plain epoxy and favors acrylic, cement toppings, or a non-yellowing polyaspartic.

Grip is the other priority. Slip standards set a higher bar for wet, barefoot areas than for level indoor floors, so we'd choose texture over gloss every time on a pool deck.

What a Pool Deck Quote Should Cover

  • The system by name, and whether it's a coating, a topping or a full overlay
  • Square footage, including steps and the strip along the coping
  • Crack and joint repair, and whether joints are recut or resealed
  • Color, since lighter colors run cooler
  • A resealing schedule

Sealing a sound deck runs about $1 to $3 a square foot, and if your deck is only dirty, a wash and reseal may be all it needs.
